It's summer of 1997, and I’m seven years old. I’ve just finished typing up my last homework assignment of the year, and a few loud keyboard taps later, it’s saved to a floppy disk, ready for printing at the school library. I grab my headphones and press play on my Walkman: Fleetwood Mac – Rumors.

In this post, I want to explore this for what has become a new data imperative for organizations today: effectively reporting their environmental, social and governance (ESG) data to meet new regulations.

In the popular 90’s film “Sliding Doors”, the life of the lead character, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, takes two divergent paths based on whether she catches or misses a train. Spoiler alert if you have not watched it: one path ultimately (and surprisingly) leads to a better outcome than the other.

January 28th is Data Privacy Day, an international effort to empower individuals and encourage businesses to respect privacy, safeguard personal data and enable trust. Data has had quite the year, hasn’t it? I have worked in the data and analytics space more years than I would like to admit, but I can honestly say that it’s been one of the most exciting, wild rides in recent memory. Qlik has been along for that ride, and brought quite a bit of excitement all on its own. So I thought I would recap the five moments that really stand out for me from the world of data… and Qlik in 2023. But, hang on.

I consider myself pretty lucky: I love technology and get paid to pursue my hobby. I also get to say yes to opportunities that come my way that can increase value to my company and our clients. It was one of these opportunities that led us to adopt change data capture (CDC) technology, resulting in an added value proposition for our customers.
